Let’s Talk About the PDrive

At KWI Clutching, we’ve spent countless hours in R&D, pushing the limits of CVT clutch technology. The BRP PDrive primary clutch was originally designed to reduce noise—but over time, we’ve seen serious wear and performance issues emerge.

These problems cause hard shifting, secondary clutch spinning, and inconsistent engagement, all of which affect performance and reliability.

We’ve developed a fix that addresses 90% of these issues, with the remaining 10% being normal wear and tear that occurs over time.

At KWI, we don’t just identify problems—we create real solutions. Our industry-leading fixes improve reliability and ensure you can GO FAST without worry.

After extensive testing, we’ve identified four major issues with the P Drive clutch and developed solutions to keep your UTV running at peak performance.

Issue #1: Governor Cup Spring Support Hanging Up

  • The governor cup spring support can hang up, preventing the moveable sheave from moving freely.

  • This causes intermittent partial engagement at idle, leading to rough operation.

KWI Solution: We designed a new spring support that eliminates sticking and interference.

Issue #2: Stop Sleeve Sticking

  • The stop sleeve on the main shaft sticks, restricting sheave movement.

  • This results in partial engagement at idle, causing issues with shifting and belt wear.

KWI Solution: Our updated stop sleeve ensures smooth movement and eliminates sticking.

Issue #3: Rapid Wear of Composite Cone Rollers

  • The moveable sheave’s composite cone rollers wear out quickly, leading to misalignment and restricted movement.

  • This can cause the clutch to engage inconsistently and lead to excessive belt wear.

KWI Recommendation: Inspect and replace rollers and pins every 300-800 miles if you notice wear or sticky primary symptoms.

Issue #4: Governor Cup Surface Wear

  • Over time, aluminum roller surfaces on the governor cup wear grooves, leading to misalignment and movement restrictions.

  • This wear impacts how smoothly the clutch operates, eventually requiring replacement.

KWI Recommendation: Inspect and replace the governor cup every 1000-2000 miles to maintain optimal performance.

KWI’s Approach: Performance Over Quick Fixes

At KWI, we don’t just patch up problems—we improve the entire CVT clutch system.

We constantly test, refine, and push the limits of performance by engineering new components that last longer and perform better. We develop proactive solutions so you can focus on riding instead of repairs.

We work side by side with riders to ensure our solutions deliver real-world results—because when you’re out on the trails, dunes, or track, reliability is everything.

Does the Float Mod Fix Can Am Pdrive Clutch Sticking Issues?

This is a common question, so let’s clear it up:

The Float Mod is specifically designed to fix belt misalignment and allows you to center the belt on the primary clutch. It works 100% for that purpose.

However, the Can Am X3 Pdrive clutch has separate design issues that cause sticking and engagement problems. These are two different issues requiring two different solutions.

That’s why all KWI P-Drive Float packages now include updates to fix the sticking problems.

If your service was done early on, KWI has made revisions and upgrades to address newly discovered issues. Contact us to learn how to receive these updates.
